With deep roots in the heart of Silicon Valley, RDC has provided radiation dosimetry
services to the medical service and other industries since 1949. Dr. Francis R.
Holden, founder, was a Certified Health Physicist and Certified Industrial Hygienist
with a doctoral degree in chemistry. Partnering with three other medical and health
physics professionals, they co-founded the Industrial Health and Hygiene Association
in San Francisco. Dr. Holden, an entrepreneur, worked at the Naval Radiological
Defense Lab and Stanford Research Institute until the dosimetry start-up business
could sustain itself. In the early 1950s, the company name was changed to Radiation
Detection Company (RDC) and relocated to Palo Alto, California.
Dr. Holden's son, Richard (Dick), worked with his father following a short professional
baseball career. Dick learned the dosimetry business and observed his father's ethics
and values displayed time and again in his dealings with customers. Customers were
respected and dealt with honestly. Employees became long-time "partners"
rather than simply "resources." Today a considerable number of employees
have been with the company more than 25 years, including a number of second and
third generation employees from the same families.
Dick graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Business Management.
After Dr. Holden's untimely death in 1966, Dick became President and worked with
a management team to further develop the business. RDC continued to grow and expand
and moved to Sunnyvale, California around 1970.
In the early 1980's RDC established what was to become a long-term relationship
with a team of legal and management professionals who give continuity and counsel
necessary to continued business development in the complex modern business climate.
One of those team members, Barrie Laing, served as General Counsel from 1983 to
1996, when he became President and General Counsel of RDC. Dick Holden remains as
Chairman and oversees the marketing and sales efforts of the company.
Continued growth during the decade of the 90's once again made it necessary to expand
the company facilities and RDC moved to Gilroy, California in 2001.
RDC's management team is passionate about the company's core values of honesty,
integrity, customer loyalty and financial stewardship. It is this company's philosophy
that "to whom much is given, much is required." Consequently, RDC is a
strong supporter of organizations and educational institutions that reach out with
love and compassion to those who are in need in RDC's own community and around the
world. RDC's commitment to the care of employees and customers lies at the heart
and soul of the organization.
